The Story Structure
The following illustrations are taken directly from Freeman's book, The Photographer's Story: The Art of the Visual Narrative. Below, the "classic narrative" formula is provided as a visual. The process of telling a story is the same in visual storytelling as it is in creative writing. Freeman uses Smith's Country Doctor to illustrate both the selection of images as they are related to the "narrative formula", and the layout decisions made by LIFE, when the essay was published.
Studying sequential and editorial decisions such as the ones made by the editors of LIFE for Country Doctor, help us to develop effective narratives and direct the viewer or reader to experience the "story" the way we want it to be told.
